About the Better Futures Framework

Better Futures enables support workers and service users to plan, record, and review progress towards independence. Its structured scoring system and visual progress tools help individuals track their journey, while managers and commissioners can access clear data to inform decision-making and demonstrate value for money.

Used by more than 35 provider organisations, 2,000 support workers, and 50,000 people across Scotland, Better Futures continues to set the standard for outcomes-based housing support.

The Five Goals of Better Futures

The framework is built around five broad goals, each representing a key area of housing-related support:

  1. Accommodation – Ensuring people have safe, secure, and suitable housing
  2. Health – Supporting physical and mental wellbeing, and recovery from addictions
  3. Safety & Security – Addressing domestic abuse, harassment, and risk management
  4. Social & Economic Wellbeing – Building life skills, managing money, and developing confidence
  5. Employment & Meaningful Activity – Encouraging learning, skills development, and participation in work or volunteering

Each area contains specific elements that can be individually scored, creating a clear picture of progress over time. This combination of qualitative and quantitative data allows organisations to evidence both individual achievements and wider service outcomes.
